Kitchener, Ontario – 2024
This article will analyze and recount a case of a garage that required disinfection and removal of raccoon feces. The garage contained a great deal of items from tools and windows to baby carriages and bicycles. The contents of the garage must be assumed to have been contaminated as the raccoon will have feces on its feet and fur and way have touched or stepped on or grazed any or all of the items. This precaution is important to consider as the danger of raccoon feces is severe. Raccoon feces can contain a dangerous parasite called raccoon round worm. This parasite is untreatable and fatal. There have not been many instances of infection and the likelihood of getting infected by it is minimal at best. The danger of it however is sever and when dried the roundworm eggs can become air borne. The best thing to do if you see it is to leave it alone and call a professional if it is on your property or call the city if it is on public grounds. Attempting to clean it yourself can be risky and should not be cleaned by someone without the proper protective equipment.
This visit is located between Lancaster street east and East Avenue in Kitchener, Ontario.
The technicians, before the work is done, must first inspect and confer with the customer or customers on the issue and then must inspect for the cost of the removal. In cases like this the whole contents of the garage must taken into consideration as each item must be disinfected, steamed and cleaned by hand. The technician will have to take a great deal of time to ensure the garage has been completely sterilized of all feces and ensure there is no remaining risk of raccoon round worm eggs on any of the items or found anywhere in the garage. This is not an easy process and can cost a good deal of money.
Kitchener, Ontario: Title Seat of Waterloo
Kitchener, a city in Ontario, Canada, is about 100 km west of Toronto. It’s the regional seat of the Regional Municipality of Waterloo. Kitchener, formerly Berlin, changed its name in 1916. It covers 136.86 km² and had a population of 256,885 in the 2021 census. Indigenous communities have inhabited the area for centuries. The Museum of Waterloo showcases interactive art and science exhibits, while Victoria Park houses the Joseph Schneider Haus, a living-history museum from the 19th century. Doon Heritage Village, part of the Waterloo Region Museum, offers a glimpse into early-1900s life with farmhouses and a blacksmith shop.
Exterior Inspection
When the technician arrived on site they performed an exterior inspection of the garage and found many entry points that the raccoon could have used to enter the garage including holes around the base of the roof and the walls. The customer was most interested in the disinfection of the garage and did not want any of the areas sealed to stop further animal ingress. Whether they had the shed removed or simply left it as it was is unknown.
Interior Inspection
While inspecting the interior found a great deal of feces on the floor of the garage and contamination on all parts of the interior structure as well as on many of the items stored in the space. The technical inspected, took photographs and made recommendations for the disinfection process and sent that information for the office to process and for a quote to be made.
Initial Measures
The first step was to clean and disinfect the feces in the garage that was present on the floor and walls. this process involves spraying the feces down with hospital grade botanical sterilizers and then removing the feces. The ground is then sprayed again and the area thoroughly cleaned. While the cleaning is effective there is no guarantee that there will not be stains remaining on the floor, structure or items. The job is to get rid of the danger of the feces and roundworm and is not an aesthetic process. The items where all individually removed from the garage, sprayed with hospital grade botanical sterilizer, the feces removed and then sprayed again and cleaned thoroughly. All of the items as well as all of the surfaces of the garage where treated with boiling steam at over one hundred degrees celsius which is the necessary temperature to kill all present round worm eggs. The items where then stored in a moving truck which was rented by the customer so they can be stored in a safer place other than in the garage.
Conclusion
The technician disinfect all the items that the customer wanted to keep and made the shed safe for occupation. Though the entry ways were not sealed the customer was content with the job and with the rescue of the items in the garage. What happened to the garage after the job was completed is unknown at this time. However if it still stand it is a likely place for raccoons and other animals to inhabit and may be used as a latrine again.
