Mississauga, Ontario – 2024
This article will analyze and recount a case of a racoon that has broken into an attic in Mississauga, Ontario. The house was extremely old and its roof was in very poor shape. The initial inspection found not only an entry way but a large number of area that needed to be sealed to stop animals from getting in, including the current raccoon. A one way door would be redundant without the further exclusion so the additional work was required and necessary to protect the home from animal ingress.
This visit is located in Mississauga, Ontario.
The technicians, before the work is done, must first inspect and confer with the customer or customers on the issue and then must inspect for the source of the activity. The result of the inspection was a very large job that requires sealing off so many entry ways that the job could not be done on site that day. The house was older than a century with a roof that had never been replaced in that time. The viable entry ways animals could use to enter were endless. Putting a one way door on the main entry way would be redundant if the other exclusion was not completed along with the doors installation.
Mississauga, Ontario: Title of city
Mississauga, a large Canadian city on Lake Ontario’s shores, boasts a diverse population and vibrant culture. Across the lake from Toronto, it offers urban amenities and natural beauty. The waterfront features Port Credit, with shops, a lighthouse, and a marina. Multi-use trails in parks and woodlands provide outdoor recreation. Mississauga Celebration Square hosts multicultural festivals and transforms into a popular skating rink in winter. Shoppers flock to its diverse malls and entertainment. Mississauga’s growth is linked to Toronto but also attracted a multicultural population in the 20th century. The city developed a thriving transit-oriented central business district. Malton, northeast of Mississauga, houses Toronto Pearson International Airport and corporate headquarters. Unlike traditional cities, Mississauga is a unique amalgamation of three former villages, two townships, and rural hamlets that once held significant population centres but were later incorporated into a single urban area.
Exterior Inspection
When the technician arrived on site they performed an exterior inspection of the property and found activity at the drip edge which is where the roof meets the eaves. Due to the age of the roof the area had recessed so far back there were openings large than a foot a raccoon could simply walk through to get into the attic.
Initial Measures
The first step was to install the one way door. The one way door allows the animal to vacate from its entry way humanely and then closes once the animal has passed through it and locks from the other side. The animal can try to renter but the door will not open from that end. The issue with this is if the animal has other areas it can access it can just make a new hole and go right back into the attic. If those hole already exist the animal may not even have needed to make a hole in the first place. It could have just walked in through any of the existing entry ways. This is why on the initial visit the most important work which was sealing off forty three feet of drip edge. The drip edge is were the roof meets the eaves and as the roof ages this area can recede from the eaves causing an opening that is accessible from all the way around the house.
Proposed exclusion
The technician sealed off all forty three feet of drip edge with galvanized steel waterproof mesh which prevented the raccoon from reentering the attic after it vacated through the one way door. The exclusion was effective and because of that further exclusion of the roof was done including thirty feet of soffit protection. Soffits are the vents on the underside of the roof where the walls and the eaves are separated. These are vented to allow the attic insulation breath but are also areas that animals can easy access. This further protected the roof from animal ingress and resolved the wildlife issue the customer was having.
Conclusion
The technician excluded almost all of the drip edge and sufficing around the roof and the raccoon vacate through the one way door. With no where else to go as the drip edge had now been sealed the raccoon vacated the property to seek out a new den. This is why it is so important to get your roof inspected by a professional wildlife technician. Even if you aren’t hearing sounds getting the roof checked and sealed can prevent you from having to spends large amounts of money to get an animal out that should never have been able to enter the attic in the first place.
