Raccoons are a destructive and dangerous species of mammals that can kill you without even being present on your property. They are the vector species for rabies which means they are the cause of 90 percent of human or animal inspections of the virus. They possess a dangerous parasite in their bowels called raccoon roundworm that is inoperable and incurable. Their feces contain billions of eggs and when it dries the feces and the spores as they are referred to, become air born. One single spore inhaled or eaten will cause a rapid infection of the disease which grows rapidly and sheds eggs by the millions. The worms that grow from the eggs infest every inch of every organ in your body. From the skin to the brain to the eyes, they cannot be removed without laser surgery from the eyes and are entirely incurable. No course of antibiotics or other medicines can stop them. The danger of your pet or small child accidentally consuming it or spreading it around is massive. The spores themselves are nearly invulnerable and can only be destroyed with a high heat of over one hundred degrees celsius. Sunlight cannot kill them and in fact, they can survive in direct sunlight for years. The danger of this feces is so severe that a professional must be called right away. You must be sure they use powerful heat and sterilizers in not just the area of the feces but the localized area surrounding it. Without the boiling steam, the roundworm eggs will not die.
Trying to keep the wild animal off your property is not an easy task. They are often too small to catch and too dangerous to chase off. Many times have people come out to their backyard to find a raccoon sleeping on their deck. Disturbing it is a mistake, they are highly aggressive and can easily kill you with a scratch, a bit or even with their feces. They are carnivores in the summer and omnivores in the winter and their general fair is half-eaten long-dead animals. If the raccoons return to the property often then you may be able to hire a trapper to remove them from the neighbourhood. Remember, though, the law is that animals cannot be relocated further than one kilometre from their native habitat. Raccoons are skilled and they may very well find their way back. So keep a lookout for their feces, if you see it, stay away from it and call a professional to remove it properly.
