How To Make a One-Way Door For Raccoons

Raccoons are rarely a threat. They come to your property to look for food and water. While they are furry they are not warm in the winter and while they could live in a burrow or log your attic is much warmer and safer. If a raccoon has entered our attic your shed, in your garage or under your deck then you must remove them because your home and your family are in danger. When a raccoon takes up living on a property the situation goes from wandering and looking for food to defecating and fighting your pets and children. This is a danger but you are still not allowed to harm the raccoon. You must evict it from its entryway humanely. The only way to do this is with something called a one-way door. Building a one-way door requires building a steel frame to fit a piece of thick plexiglass into. The glass must be hinged. Spring must be connected to the glass and the frame. This will result in a spring-locking one-way door. You can weld galvanized steel to wrap an area or cover a larger area that is being used as the entranceway. You must bolt the galvanized steel mesh to the area and attach the one-way door in such a way that the animal can leave through it. This is a complicated process especially as it is on a roof.

Getting rid of things that attract wild animals to your property should always be your first step. make sure they have no access to food or water on your property

The only alternative is trapping which is often seen as inhumane and should not be used when a one-way door will get the animal out much faster and more humanely. When a raccoon is evicted they do not suddenly decide to come back. They have been scared off. If you see another raccoon then the reality of it is that you live in an area with lots of raccoons. If you want that to stop there are some basic rules you can follow. Make sure there is no sign of food on your property. This is important as that is what wild animals are coming to look for. The second thing is water. Chlorinated or not the animals don’t know. They will drink it, feel sick and fall in and drown. So keep your pool tightly covered, not just a tarp over it. This will prevent animals from finding food and water on your property, not coming on to it to explore. The good news is they will find nothing and will not come back.
