Raccoon Feces in a Church Bell Tower

Toronto, Ontario – 2024

This article will analyze and recount a case of raccoon removal and feces disinfection in a tower of a church. It will detail the steps taken in the removal of a raccoon from the church tower and the disinfection of the feces left in its stead, Dundas Street East and Sherbourne Street in Toronto, Ontario.

The technicians, before the work is done, must first inspect and confer with the customer or customers on the issue and then must inspect for the source of the activity, This situation began as an inspection of the church tower from the removal of feces as well as the exclusion of the openings in the tower through wooden paneled venting that was open to the exterior.

East End Toronto, Ontario: Riverdale

The southeastern area of Toronto known as the east end includes the areas of Riverdale around the area of the Lower Don Valley. This area includes older Victorian homes and was one of the original areas of Toronto first built on and is as old as old Toronto itself. There are many shops, bars and restaurants in this area and is famed for its culture and beauty.

Interior Inspection

When the technicians arrived on site they performed an interior inspection of the tower accessible through a series of ladders up to the top of the bell tower. There was a long-standing and large amount of raccoon feces in the bell tower which was a clear sign of raccoon occupancy. The occupancy may have been multi-generational. The entry was through wooden paneled venting which allowed the raccoons to enter the tower from the exterior.

Initial Measures

The first step was to seal off the area the raccoons were using to enter which involved the use of galvanized steel mesh attached to the open ventilation areas of the tower behind the wooden paneling. A one-way door was installed to allow any animals still inside the tower to vacate. The quote for the feces removal was then given and would be done once it was sure that any remaining animals in the tower had vacated.

Proposed exclusion

The technician sealed off the vented opening of the tower using the steel mesh and the one-way door. This allows the animals to vacate and prevents them from getting back in. A total area of of 45 feet of mesh was used to seal these areas along with two one-way doors. One door for the adult raccoons and a second smaller door for babies as this work was performed during the raccoon baby season.

Disinfection

Upon the completion of the exclusion the disinfection of the bell tower was performed by spraying down the feces with hospital-grade botanical sterilizers to ensure the feces were safe to remove, then removing the feces, spraying down the area again and cleaning as best as possible. Due to the danger of raccoon roundworm eggs, whether they are present or not the technician uses boiling steam that is over one hundred degrees Celsius to kill off any possible presence of roundworm eggs.

Conclusion

The bell tower was fully excluded, upon disinfection and cleaning the two one-way doors were removed and the exclusion was sealed. The raccoons as well as other wildlife and birds were barred from entry into the tower and the work was completed.
