Where Do Raccoons Go During The Day?

Raccoons are rarely out during the day unless they are sick or starving. Raccoons return to their den when they have finished hunting for food. They are nocturnal for that reason. Squirrels and humans are diurnal which means we prefer sunlight to darkness. This is consistent between dogs and cats. Cat people tend to be night people. Dog people tend to be morning people. This is the same for the animals themselves. Felines like lions tigers and raccoons are all nocturnal carry-on feeders that all have stomach worms that you can catch from their feces but do not affect them at all. All felines have sharp claws that carry diseases like blood poisoning so if you see a raccoon during the day the reason is it probably has rabies and you should get away from it quickly. This is important as rabies is incurable and deadly. No doctor or hospital can fix you they can only sedate you and make you comfortable. Remember, rabies has many symptoms one of which is hydrophobia. This is a psychological condition induced by a brain infection from a viral source. This virus, lyssavirus or the rabies simplex virus is a dangerous and incurable disease. Your only defence against is to be vaccinated regularly like getting a tetanus shot against rust getting into your blood. Dangerous illnesses like this used to be death for anyone who got a splinter but with the advent of cures, vaccines and medical technology the world has improved dramatically.

Raccoons come to your property for food
Raccoons come to your property for food, they may also come for a den under your deck or in your attic. Females will search for safe places to den in the baby season as males will kill their babies if they find them. This is important to know as a large raccoon is likely male and if they are on your property they are most likely looking for food.

If you have a rabid raccoon on your property you should stay far away from it. Call the humane society and have removed it, they will take it to a vet and have it humanely put down. If the animal is not sick then there is nothing you can do but try to trap it if you want it gone for good. But there is something you can do to get them to leave after inspecting your property. This involves removing any access to water or food on your property. Raccoons come to find these things, if they find them they will consider your property a good place to nest and then the den may be your attic. Remove any access to food and water and store your garbage in the garage or shed. You can also call a company to seal off the roof and put up a raccoon one-way door that will allow any current occupying raccoon to vacate humanely.
