Can Raccoons Be Pets

While raccoons seem very friendly animals and fun to look at, they make terrible pets and this is because raccoons are wildlife animals that cannot be domesticated. Even though, numerous attempts have been somewhat successful, raccoons displayed behavior not compatible with human lifestyles.

If you are dealing with a raccoons, call Raccoon Control immediately to have the raccoons dealt with.

Raccoons have simply different needs that the human cannot provide and control as easily compared to actual successful domesticated animals such as dogs and cats that even evolved physically and mentally to make them more suitable for human lifestyles.

Dogs and cats served functions to advance or assist several civilizations such as hunting or pest control. Dogs and cats are social animals that develop a bond with their human, whereas raccoons do not even come close to forming a significant attachment.

Raccoons cannot be easily trained and made to adapt to human habitats. It’s because they have strong instinctual behaviors that prioritize their own survival rather than for the benefit of the human. In short, raccoons aren’t loyal and reliable animals to expect certain things from.

Raccoons are foragers and explores by nature and a baked-in instinct is not easy to shake off. They have to go outside and forage. Furthermore, raccoons do not stay in one place as they move from place to place on a very frequent basis.

While there are multiple videos on the internet showing apparent domesticated raccoons, these raccoons are not domesticated. They just happen to  successfully captured wild  animals, and this makes it illegal in Canada and other countries to keep a raccoon as a pet.

Raccoons are wild animals and cannot be domesticated since it takes generations of other domesticated raccoons to make them hospitable to live with humans. Raccoons require different needs and resources than dogs, and this even comes down to the basic diet of the raccoon to the actual physical activity.

Raccoons are very susceptible to obesity and this can be seen in how unhealthy heavy raccoons can look in some parts of Canada. Raccoons in nature have a healthy varied diet of vegetables, fruits, shellfish, eggs, to even poultry. In the city, their diet changes dramatically as they have to eat whatever they can find in the dumpsters, trash bins, or on the streets. This unfortunately, is not very #Healthy. Their diet in the city consists mostly of fatty food and highly processed foods that contribute to their shortened lifespans.

Keeping them would be cruel, even though they may seem happy on camera. These raccoons are often held in very confined spaces compared to their natural habitat which is vast and stretches miles upon miles.

If you see a wild or injured raccoon, call a rehabilitation centre or call the technicians from Raccoon Control to pick them up. If you are disturbed by raccoons, call Raccoon Control for effective raccoon removal.
